"Come from away... here to Stay" article from our January 2011 newsletter

The back-to-the-land movement did come to Carleton County. It was a conscious decision by some to leave city life for a more self-sufficient rural existence, and it peaked in the late 1960s and early ‘70s. Over a cup of tea, I had the pleasure of hearing the stories of two families that moved to Knowlesville with their families during that time. My hope was to get a picture of Knowlesville 25 to 30 years ago and see how it has changed. Also, it was nice to get to know my neighbours a bit better. Read more...

"Armond Community Before Electricity" article from our August 2010 newsletter

I was from Coldsteam, and I was married out there (in Armond). I lived there 43 years. In the same house. We lived in Gordon’s family house and his mother and father lived there. They had 15 children, all born at home. I don’t know how she did it and got so much accomplished. I’ve never been able to get ahead of it all. Back then, she made her own butter and usually the hen pen was her responsibility to make sure to collect the eggs and she did all her knitting, all her sow- ing, all the canning, and lots of pancakes!
